Sound Vista Kids: How I Turned a Job into a Community Movement

Sound Vista is a mobile home park in Washington — a no-frills community of hardworking families who deserve to feel just as proud of their home as anyone else. As an assistant to the property manager, I saw an opportunity to give something back to the people who make this community what it is.

Behind every door at Sound Vista are real families, real neighbors, and real kids with big dreams. Sound Vista Kids was born from a simple belief — that every community, regardless of its size or income level, deserves to have traditions, to celebrate its people, and to feel a genuine sense of belonging.

I started with the kids because children are the heart of any neighborhood. By celebrating their creativity, their dreams, and their voices, I wanted to give every family a reason to feel proud of where they live and invested in the people around them. No competition, no pressure — just every child getting their own dedicated feature page on the community website and a small thank-you gift card in the mail, as a token of appreciation from management to the families who call Sound Vista home.

What started as an idea has grown into an annual tradition — a recurring celebration that the Sound Vista community can look forward to every year. Sound Vista Kids is about more than the kids. It's about dignity, pride, and proving that belonging isn't determined by your zip code or the size of your home.

Varsity Golf Captain

Varsity Golf has been a huge part of my high school experience. I have played golf since the 4th grade. Golf has so much to teach and reveal about life and ourselves. Someone once described golf as an exercise in failure management. It’s probably one of the hardest sports to master. But I love it. It’s taught me how to deal with and overcome challenges. Just as in life, despite our best efforts, obstacles and challenges are inevitable. Golf has taught me, life is not about being perfect. No one’s round goes exactly as planned. But the key is how to think of and respond to the challenges that come. They are not things to avoid or be afraid of, but they are opportunities put into my life to learn and grow from. As Varsity Captain, I try to instill this same spirit among my teammates. I do my best to lead by example, help younger players, and keep the team focused and encouraged during practices and tournaments. I compete as one of the top players on the team and have helped Kamiak win league and district championships, and place 5th at the WIAA 4A State Championship. One of the things I am most proud of is earning the “Best Captain EVER” award from my coach. To me, that meant a lot because it showed that my leadership mattered, not just my scores.

ASB Treasurer

As ASB Treasurer, I help manage money for school events, programs, and activities. Since Kamiak has over 2,400 students, the decisions ASB makes can affect a lot of people. My role includes tracking funds, reviewing spending requests, helping with budgets, and working with other student leaders and advisors. It has taught me how much planning goes into the events students see at school. I like ASB because it gives me to opportunity to serve my school community in a very real way. The money is not just numbers on a spreadsheet. It turns into assemblies, events, clubs, and activities that students actually experience.

DECA President

DECA has been one of the main ways I’ve explored business throughout high school. I started as a Director in 10th grade, became Vice President of Finance in 11th, and now serve as President. In those roles, I’ve helped lead chapter operations, financial planning, competitions, and member development, establishing goals and initiatives that strengthen the organization and its impact on students. I’ve facilitated 20+ meetings, mentored 100+ members, and helped our chapter grow from roughly 30 members to over 200. I also worked closely with our student store, where annual profits grew from over $100,000 to over $140,000.

Through DECA competition, I became a two-time ICDC qualifier, and in one of those appearances, I earned 5th place at ICDC in Entrepreneurship Team Decision Making. This helped to grow my ability to think quickly, work with a team, and explain business decisions.

DECA really helped to nurture different areas and aspects of business to me, as well as connect me to a great community of other like minded students and friends.

FBLA President

I joined FBLA as Treasurer in 10th grade, continued in the role through 11th grade, and now serve as President. I’ve helped manage chapter finances, budgets, fundraising, competition expenses, and overall operations while helping grow membership from about 5 students to 25. I’ve coordinated 15+ meetings, mentored 20+ members, and helped secure more than $1,000 to make attending the State Leadership Conference more affordable for our members. I also competed and placed 3rd in one FBLA event and 5th in another, which qualified me for the State Leadership Conference. Competing in FBLA helped me get better at presenting and explaining my ideas under pressure. FBLA has been another way for me to build my business skills outside of class. It has also taught me that leadership is less about having the biggest role in the room and more about being organized, dependable, and willing to step in whenever a need presents itself.

Video Games Club Founder and President

I started Video Games Club because I wanted to create a fun space where students could hang out, compete, and meet people they might not normally talk to. As President, I organize tournaments, make brackets, plan logistics, promote events, and help make sure everything runs smoothly. We have hosted large tournaments with over 200 students, and the club has become a place where people can relax and enjoy themselves after school. This club taught me that community does not always have to be built through something serious. Sometimes people just need a place where they feel welcome, and Video Games Club became that for a lot of students.

WearThere
Founder and Vice President

WearThere is a clothing club at Kamiak that focuses on fashion, sustainability, and giving back. I help as Vice President and one of the founding members. My role is to help manage club funds, track expenses, and support clothing drives and events. We want the club to be a place where students can connect through clothing while also helping people who need it. I like WearThere because it feels creative but also useful. It is not just about clothes or style. It is about taking something students already care about and using it to build community.
